How to cure or season a cast iron pan?
The Goal: Polymerization to create an impenetrable barrier! This can be done for curing or recuring a cast iron pan.
- Wash and clean the pan.
- Place in a cold oven at 200°F or lowest temperature until warm (~5 minutes).
- Take 1 teaspoon of oil and rub it everywhere on the pan, including the handle.
- Now rub it all off!
- Place pan mid-oven upside down.
- Turn oven on to it's normal highest heat (not self cleaning).
- Leave it in the oven for 1 hour.
- Turn off the heat and leave in oven until the pan is cool.
- All done! Repeat 2 more times for best results (not necessary).
